The following are the Highway Recommendations of Transportation Outlook:
- Establish highway preservation as the area’s highest priority
- Almost $1.7 billion is recommended for unspecified preservation projects which will be identified on an ongoing basis.
- Additional AMATS Surface Transportation Program (STP) funds should be allocated for preserving the highway system. Currently, up to 20 percent of STP funds are set aside for resurfacing improvements.
- Improve safety conditions on highways to reduce crashes and fatalities
- $46 million is recommended for unspecified safety projects which will be identified on an ongoing basis.
- Projects to improve safety are recommended at the State Route 8 Howe Ave Interchange, Barney’s Busy Corners in Cuyahoga Falls, and Tallmadge Circle in Tallmadge.
- Improve highly congested corridors to reduce congestion
- Major widening projects include the Central Interchange in Akron, State Route 43 through Streetsboro, and Arlington Rd in Green.
- Increase flexibility in funding by considering unspecified operational improvements consistent with Transportation Outlook
- $31 million is recommended for unspecified operational projects which will be identified on an ongoing basis.
- Operational improvements include signal coordination, turn lanes, reconstructing roads to standard widths, and roundabouts.
- Regional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Architecture will be maintained and updated when applicable.
- Promote carpooling by continuing the OhioRideshare program
- Work with AMATS Policy Committee to discuss ways for the region to manage residential and commercial development growth
- Allocate $14 million in ARRA funding to shovel ready projects identified in this table
- 79 projects have been identified, totaling over $928 million, intended to alleviate congestion, improve safety, and help preserve the system
