Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities

Bicycle and Pedestrian Recommendations

Creating a regional system of bikeways is the top priority.  Because recreational trails are popular regional amenities, AMATS will continue to focus on constructing regional bikeways.  Transportation Outlook recommends $105 million toward bikeway improvements.  It also recommends that bicycle and pedestrian facilities should be considered as part of road improvements.

The Towpath Trail is set to be completed through Summit County by 2011.  Once completed, it is recommended that investment be focused on completing the remaining regional bikeways, especially in Portage County.  Transportation Outlook also recommends a number of feeder trail projects which will connect to the regional bikeways.

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Recommendations are fiscally constrained.  Project costs are shown in 2009 dollars.

The following are the Bikeway Recommendations of Transportation Outlook:

  • Complete a network of regional trails
    • 29 bikeway projects are recommended for $105 million.
    • The funding priority is to complete the Towpath Trail and other regional trails.
  • Invest in Pedestrian Facilities to improve connectivity and accessibility
    • AMATS will pay for curb ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act with part of the ODOT Urban Paving Program.
  • When using AMATS funds for road projects, communities should consider adding bicycle and pedestrian facilities where appropriate
  • Bicycle and pedestrian facilities should be targeted in areas where land use and development promote frequent use

This table displays each bicycle and pedestrian recommendation, its limits and its cost.
