Bicycle Transportation

In the past, the regional objective with regards to bicycle planning had been to complete the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail through Summit County, as it is a major regional trail. This trail connects Cleveland to New Philadelphia via Akron following the canal route along the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers. As the final segments of the trail in Summit County are being completed, the regional priority is shifting to trails in Portage County, including the Portage Hike & Bike Trail and the Western Reserve Heritage Trail.

Recently, members of the public, as well as some community officials have expressed interest in bicycle lanes, primarily for non-recreational travel. The interest in these bicycle lanes has increased with the rise in fuel prices and environmental concerns. While AMATS is committed to identifying and promoting bike friendly roadways, there is a concern that a large investment in bicycle lanes would not have a substantial impact on congestion. Adverse weather, average commute length, land use patterns, and an aging population may hinder a widespread shift to bicycle commuting.

It is important for AMATS to continue to provide bicycle recreation opportunities to the region and improve the safety of those using bicycles on roadways.
